Headroom is necessary to achieve a great mix when used together with skill and ear training. Even though there are many different ways to get head room in a mix. Today we'll use an EQ for the job.

Let's say you have quite a few sounds or instruments in your mix. Some may cover a full range in the sound spectrum, such as a piano. Or some may only have a lot of low end sounds like a deep synth. These competing sounds can mask others or easily get masked themselves. Cutting the frequencies you don't need can give you headroom for other things in the mix.

If you have a deep synth you don't need the bass to the synth. Save that part for the sub bass and kicks. Remember, low end takes the most headroom. So using a high pass filter on the deep synth can give you headroom and clarity.

I will be making a Mix-Torial in the future to explain this in detail on KoncreatMixing.com
